SAINT NICHOLAS

of MYRA

16x20, acrylic paint, spray paint, and marker on canvas panel, 2015.

Saint Nicholas (b. 270 - d. 343) is the inspiration for the modern day Santa Claus. He is the patron saint of children, sailors, fishermen, falsely accused, repentant thieves, archers, brewers, pharmacists, and pawnbrokers. His feast day is December 6th, on the eve of which, children leave out their shoes, according to tradition, so that St. Nicholas will fill them with coins and sweets during the night.

This painting was based on the more traditional icons of St. Nicholas in which he wears red vestments and holds a Bible in one arm. A combination of heavy body acrylic paint, acrylic spray paintand stencils, and paint markers were used to create this work.
